Red Banks Savanna Heritage Area
One of NERN’s long-term projects is to foster the creation and development of the Red Banks Savanna Historic District & Heritage Area in northeastern Brown County.
This effort seeks recognition of the rare conditions and unique relationship between the natural and cultural history of this distinctive landscape. Working with other partners, the Network will examine the development and creation of a National Register of Historic Places, working through the State Historical Society for the Red Banks area in order to recognize the importance of this landscape.
A parallel interpretive and signage program which focuses on the Niagara Escarpment and its influence on American Indian cultures, as well as the site’s context within the broader Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway (http://www.eastcentralrpc.org/HeritageParkway/index.html) will also be created so that the public can better understand the little known history, geography, and cultural landscape of this area.
Additional information will be posted on this page as the project develops. Current project leaders include:
- Jim Uhrinak – Land restorationist and NERN Steering Committee member
- Jim Klinkert – Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust
- Lynn Austin – Brown County Resident
- Eric Fowle, - NERN Steering Committee member
